1890 George Gore, Buck Ewing and Roger Connor of the Players' League New York Giants become the first trio to hit back-to-back-to-back home runs in a win over the Pittsburgh Burghers.


1961 Boston Red Sox outfielder Carroll Hardy pinch-hits for rookie Carl Yastrzemski. On September 20, 1960, Hardy pinch hit for Ted Williams, making him the only player to go in for both future Hall of Famers. Hardy also hit his first major league home run pinch-hitting for Roger Maris when both were at Cleveland (May 18, 1958).

2009 Philadelphia Phillies starter Jamie Moyer goes six innings and gives up one earned run to earn his 250th career victory over the Washington Nationals, 4-2.

1921 There are eight doubleheaders on the major league schedule, with all four NL contests resulting in a sweep; the Pittsburgh Pirates sweep the Chicago Cubs at Forbes Field, the New York Giants sweep the Philadelphia Phillies at the Polo Grounds, the St. Louis Cardinals sweep the Cincinnati Reds at Redland Field and the Boston Braves sweep the Brooklyn Dodgers at Braves Field. Meanwhile, in the American League, the Boston Red Sox are swept by the A's in Philadelphia, and the St. Louis Browns and Chicago White Sox split a pair at Comiskey Park, the Cleveland Indians and Detroit Tigers split a pair at Navin Field, and the New York Yankees and Washington Senators split a pair at Griffith Stadium. Highlights of the doubleheaders include a two-hitter by the Senators' George Mogridge, and a sixteen inning marathon between the Braves and Dodgers.

1930 The New York Yankees trade Waite Hoyt and Mark Koenig to the Detroit Tigers for Ownie Carroll, Harry Rice and Yats Wuestling.

2009 A 25 inning marathon between the University of Texas at Austin and Boston College is the longest baseball game in NCAA Division I history. Texas Longhorns closer Austin Wood entered the game with one out in the seventh inning, and pitched 12.1 innings of no hit ball before surrendering a single in the 19th inning to Tony Sanchez. Longhorns Second baseman Tony Tucker singles in Connor Rowe in the top of the 25th, and Austin Dicharry retires Boston 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning to secure the 3-2 victory.

1880 - The Chicago White Stockings set a National League record by winning their 13th consecutive game, a record they will shatter in 4 weeks.

2000 - Second baseman Randy Velarde of the Oakland Athletics turns an unassisted triple play, just the 11th in major league history, on a line drive by the New York Yankees' Shane Spencer. With runners on first and second running with the pitch, Velarde tags Jorge Posada as he nears second base, then touches the bag to retire Tino Martinez. New York wins the game, 4-1. In 1995, while with the Yankees, Velarde turned an unassisted triple play against the Los Angeles Dodgers in spring training following the strike.

2009 - Clint Hurdle is fired as manager of the Colorado Rockies making him the second manager fired this season. He will be replaced by former Dodgers and Pirates manager Jim Tracy.

1960 Manager Casey Stengel is hospitalized with a virus and high fever and will miss 13 games. The Yankees goes 7-6 under interim manager Ralph Houk.

1979 Texas Rangers first baseman Mike Jorgensen is hit in the head by a pitch from Boston Red Sox pitcher Andy Hassler. Dave Roberts comes into the game to pinch run for Jorgensen, and Pat Putnam takes over as the Rangers' regular first baseman for the next month. Aside from a pinch-hit appearance on May 31, Jorgensen does not play again until July 1. After suffering headaches, it is discovered he has a small blood clot inside his head, which apparently caused a seizure and could have resulted in his early demise.

May 28, 1919: Art Lopatka was a professional baseball pitcher in 1954 and 1946. He pitched a total of 17 innings with the St. Louis Cardinals and Philadelphia Phillies, allowing 12 earned runs. Lopatka's career earned run average is 6.35.

May 28, 1950: James Charles (Jim) Cox (born in Bloomington, Illinois) is a former backup second baseman in Major League Baseball who played for the Montreal Expos between 1973 and 1976. He batted and threw right-handed.

May 28, 1930: Hal Carlson, 36, pitcher who won 114 games with the Pirates, Phillies and Cubs from 1917 through 1930; stricken suddenly in his hotel room before a game.

1901 Third baseman Jimmy Burke of the Milwaukee Brewers sets an American League record by committing four errors in an inning. This record will be tied in 1914 by the Cleveland Naps' Ray Chapman, and in 1942 by the Chicago Cubs' Len Merullo.

1960 Since there is no rule limiting the size or shape of the catcher's mitt, Baltimore manager Paul Richards combats the team passed-ball problem while catching Hoyt Wilhelm (38 in 1959; 11 so far this year) by devising an oversized mitt to gather in Wilhelm's fluttering knuckleball. It is half again as large as the standard glove and 40 ounces heavier. Wilhelm goes the distance in beating New York, 3–2, at Yankee Stadium. Catcher Clint Courtney has no passed balls behind the plate.

Camilo Pascual strikes out 13 but the Washington Senators loses to the Boston Red Sox, 4–3, his third loss to Boston this year.

1981 While visiting the Seattle Kingdome, Kansas City Royals centerfielder Amos Otis hits a slow roller down the third base line in the sixth inning. Seattle Mariners third baseman Lenny Randle gets on his hands and knees and tries unsuccessfully to blow the ball foul.

1984 Against the Chicago Cubs in Wrigley Field, Cincinnati Reds pitcher Mario Soto shoves third base umpire Steve Rippley for incorrectly calling a long foul ball down the left field line hit by Cubs third baseman Ron Cey a home run. After conferring, the umpires change their decision and rule it a foul ball. However, for shoving Rippley, Soto is ejected, prompting him to charge the field and attack Cubs coach Don Zimmer, which triggers a ten-minute bench-clearing brawl. The Reds won the game, completing a three game sweep of the Cubs. Four days later, National League president Chub Feeney suspended Soto five games for the incident.

1993 Two home runs shy of 400 for his career, long time Atlanta Brave and current Colorado Rockie Dale Murphy retires.

1997 Barry Larkin's streak of consecutively reaching base 13 times is stopped by Curt Schilling, who goes all the way to beat Cincinnati 2–1. Larkin singles in the first inning, but flies out in the 3rd to end his streak one shy of Pedro Guerrero's NL record, set in 1985.

2006 Curt Schilling of the Red Sox becomes the 104th major league pitcher in the modern era (and the 132nd overall, including the pre-1900 era) to win 200 games in his career with a 6-4 victory over the Devil Rays at Fenway Park.

1968 Jeff Bagwell: Jeffrey Robert Bagwell is a former Major League Baseball first baseman, who spent his entire major league career with the Houston Astros in the National League.
